By either crossing the street or taking a different route, the man can avoid the awkwardness of walking beside the stranger and maintain his ideal pace. This approach allows the man to avoid the shame of capitulating or the indignity of overtaking the other person. Additionally, it allows both parties to continue on their respective paths without any further interaction.
