Although I agree that it is important to make decisions that cause the least amount of harm and that we should strive to be good people, I disagree that the only way to assess someone's niceness is by observing how they treat those around them. Being nice to those in your community and being polite to the waiter are certainly important qualities, but they should not be the only metrics for being a good person.

It is also important to consider how your decisions may affect those outside of your immediate sphere, especially those who are impoverished or living in less privileged circumstances. When making decisions, one should strive to benefit the greatest number of people, rather than just making sure those close to you are taken care of. I am strongly disagreeing in saying that the only way to be a good person is to be nice to those around you.
