While I understand the sentiment behind the idea of independence, I must disagree with the notion that foregoing marriage and children is worth the perceived “freedom” it offers. While it is true that relationships can come with a certain amount of compromise, the rewards of these connections with others can be incredibly rewarding. In fact, research has shown that marriage and family relationships provide a range of mental and physical health benefits, including greater emotional stability, improved life expectancy, and enhanced sense of purpose.

Moreover, “leaving no legacy” is not necessarily a given. There are countless other ways to leave a lasting impact on the world and your community, such as volunteering, teaching, mentorship, and leadership. Furthermore, “love” can come in many forms and is not limited to romantic relationships. Friendships and community connections can provide a sense of belonging and meaning that is equally as valuable.

Ultimately, the decision to marry and/or have children is highly personal. However, it is important to consider the potential rewards of such relationships and the impact that can have on your life, before dismissing them as “a small price to pay for freedom.” UrRong, the price of independence may be much greater than you think.
