The suggestion to use the electric chair for animal slaughter is not intended to be a solution to the entire animal rights debate, nor was it meant to trivialize the pain and suffering of animals. It was first and foremost an attempt to provide a modicum of dignity in the meat-producing ritual. It's true that it could be more expensive than current methods, but this cost should not be a major factor when compared with the greater issue at hand.

As for the supposed "swiftly executed" steak label, its purpose was to provide an example of how such a provision of dignity could be marketed by the food industry. Whether such a label could exist in reality or not is beside the point. Consumers are already familiar with grass-fed and free-range labels, so it's not unreasonable to suggest a variation of them.

So don't think that this proposal is insensitive, misguided, or wrongheaded. On the contrary, it was put forward in good faith as an avenue of thought that all sides of the animal rights debate can entertain. And while you might think the idea of an electric chair in a slaughterhouse is absurd, I think it would make Marvin the Martian proud!
