They weren't just examples of regular humans turning a blind eye. The systematic and institutionalized nature of these events makes them stand out among the other atrocities that we are now trying to address. We must learn from the mistakes of our past if we are to make progress in the future. It's not enough to just recognize the harms of current events; we must also work to ensure that they never happen again.
