While I understand the sentiment that many people may simply pick a side in order to end a conversation about an issue that does not affect them, I believe this view is too simplistic and overlooks the fact that many people do in fact care about issues that do not affect them directly. For example, many people who are not members of the LGBTQ+ community strongly support LGBTQ+ rights, even though they do not experience discrimination personally. Similarly, communities of color have long stood in solidarity with one another despite the fact that they may not all directly experience racism in the same way. Furthermore, this view also overlooks the fact that often the same people who are quick to agree with the majority opinion on one issue may be just as quick to disagree on another. Therefore, I believe that it is wrong to assume that people are simply motivated to end conversations about issues that do not affect them, rather than being genuinely moved by the issues at hand.
