Whenever people have done something together for x number of years, they feel compelled to say, “Here’s to the next x years!” Like, “Aw, we’ve been married for 15 years, here’s to the next 15, baby!

But what’s with the expectation to renew relationship contracts into the distant future? Why always double the duration of the relationship to date?

I’d like to be able to say, “Nice! We’ve been best friends since we met ten years ago! I’d like to make a toast! Here’s to now being as good a time as any to begin growing apart.

Because if you and I had met today, there’s very little chance we would go out of our way to become even passing acquaintances.
