I was waiting at a bus stop somewhere in Middle America. Two older men were debating some topic; I paid them little attention. But then I overheard an argument that stopped me in my tracks: “Well, it’s in the Bible, so it’s true.”
I looked up at the guy who said that to acknowledge his comedic gem. Then I looked at the other guy to see how he was managing to contain his laughter. But all indications were that the first guy was completely serious, and the second guy had all but conceded his point of view in light of this revelation.
That was an interesting cultural experience for me.
